Looking at this big tree of nesting birds,

I never thought I'd see this Pretty Great Egret Mother and her Chicks.

Those yellow beaks just stand out as my Mellow Yellow.

Couldn't believe she had three up there.

I needed a much longer lens to really capture these cuties.

I cropped this picture in photoshop so that I could get a closer look at the babies.

Look what cute fuzzy little heads they have.

Sort of like my morning bed head.

And now for the surprise picture.

Sorry it is not clear but look close at what is in those babies mouths.

 

 

Can you believe it??

Mama had just fed them little fishes.

I was thrilled with what I was seeing and photographing.

I just couldn't get a clear shot.

this was the best of about 10 shots.

 

I took these pictures at the Alligator Farm in St. Augustine, Florida.

I had a Photographers field trip the last week of March.

Mid~Week~Blues~Birds

I'm staring at 2 1/2 Five Gallon buckets of Tomatoes that have to be canned.

I'm also making Strawberry Jam and Wild Blackberry Jam today.

I have no business on the computer this week.

But I wanted to play along and post my "Blue" pictures.

The first shot is a Blue Heron.

I have no idea what the next bird is

but I thought he was really pretty.

Florida Wood Stork

Wood storks are large water birds that stand 2-4 feet tall and weigh 7-10 pounds. They have wingspans as wide as 5 1/2 feet. They are mostly white, but have a black tail and many black feathers under their wings. They have no feathers on their head and neck, so the black skin underneath shows up. This makes wood storks the only tall water birds with black, bald heads. Since they have no muscles attached to their voice box, they are very quiet birds. Every now and then they will croak like a bullfrog, or hiss like a snake. They are the only type of stork native to North America.

Courtship

No, this is not snow in this tree.


It's the fowl of the air in that tree.

It's mating season for the Wood Stork, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Cattle Egret, Tricolor Heron and little Blue Heron in Florida.

I was thrilled to catch this Egret doing his courtship dance.

For once I was in the right place at the right time.

First, he bows down very low and then ever so slowly, he raises his head higher and higher and stretching his neck to the utmost limit and then bowing down again as he flicks his beautiful feathers. I was thrilled at such a beautiful sight and that I caught it on camera.

The Great Egret was threatened with extinction in the United States as plume hunters in the late 1800s reduced North American populations by more than 95 percent. Egret plumes were used within the fashion industry, primarily for women’s hats, and during peak demand an ounce of egret plumes was worth more than an ounce of gold.

TriColored Heron

Tricolored Heron, St. Augustine, Fl. 3/30/10 Note the blue bill, it's mating season.

I almost missed this beautiful bird, I was looking in the other direction and just happened to turn around.

Tricolored Herons are medium sized wading birds with slate blue feathers on most of their body except for a white chest and belly, and rust-colored neck with white stripe. They have long, yellowish colored legs and a long pointed yellow bill which turns blue during breeding season. Also known as the Louisiana Heron, they can be found in marshes, swamps, bayous, mudflats, lagoons and coastal ponds from Florida up the Atlantic coast to Maine, around the Gulf Coast to New Mexico and ranging south to northern South America and the West Indies.

The Tricolored Heron is an extremely slender bird, and moves gracefully about as it searches for fish, insects and frogs. Despite their relatively small size, they often forage in deep water with their legs completely underwater, giving the appearance that the bird is swimming.

Pelican

He can take in his beak
Food enough for a week,
But I’m danged if I see how the helican.

Any time I see a Pelican I think of this little poem that my mama always says when she sees one.
