Bridesmaids

In honor of that movie that started today, you know, "Bridesmaids"
The one I won't be seeing but have seen a commercial
 for at least 3 times every hour on the TV for the last month.
I post the following pictures.

 
25 years ago this month was the last time I was a "Bridesmaid".
The bride is the Sweetheart's youngest sister.
Isn't she beautiful? And she has a handsome husband.
Now I wonder what she was thinking when she chose this fabric for our dresses.
I wonder did I help her pick it out??
I think we were all so pretty.
I made my own dress and my sisters, I think I made Gloria's too.
 
In order, my sister Carla, (who was Angie's room mate at college at one time) Lisa Farnsworth Hales, Angie's cousin, Gloria Griffis, who was married to Angie's brother, Brad. Moi, married to her oldest brother and Her older sister, Sue. The other bridesmaid,  Lori who is married to Angie's brother, Roger, isn't in this picture but she is in the top picture.

I think we must have been in a contest too for who ever had the biggest hair???
I think Lisa wins!
She is from Utah and those girls always had bigger hair!

Travis was 4 1/2 and Harrison was 7 years old in this picture.

As if the dresses weren't enough flowers for one wedding,
Angie's great aunt Enid made her a bedspread and I think some curtains
or a valance out of the left over material!
It was really a pretty thing.
I wonder if she still has it??

Great Advice


Baz Luhrmann Sunscreen Song

On June 1, 1997, a young journalist, Mary Schmich, wrote a column in the Chicago Tribune titled “Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young”. She introduced the column as the commencement address she would give if she were asked to give one.

Her essay became famous world-wide when Baz Luhrmann – director of “Romeo & Juliet”) turned it into a #1 music single as “Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen”. You may even have heard the song and laughed at its litany of humorous but practical advice.

Inside every adult lurks a graduation speaker dying to get out, some world-weary pundit eager to pontificate on life to young people who’d rather be Rollerblading. Most of us, alas, will never be invited to sow our words of wisdom among an audience of caps and gowns, but there’s no reason we can’t entertain ourselves by composing a Guide to Life for Graduates.I encourage anyone over 26 to try this and thank you for indulging my attempt.

Ladies and gentlemen of the class of ’97:

Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they’ve faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.Don’t worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday. Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts. Don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don’t waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. The race is long and, in the end, it’s only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don’t.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else’s.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don’t be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they’ll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They’re your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you’ll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you’ll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.

Don’t mess too much with your hair or by the time you’re 40 it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

Barn Charm # 10

 
Anguilla Plantation's Barn
Glynn County, Georgia

The Anguilla Plantation derived its name from the Sea Island cotton that was believed only to be grown on the islands until successfully grown on the mainland. A double oak alley leads up to the plantation house and other 19th and 20th century buildings. The plantation house dates back to the 1840s and is a large one and a half story, side gable house with wood shingle siding. The house was a stop on the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic Railway at the turn of the 20th century. The plantation is located three miles west of Sterling, Georgia on State Route 32.

Tasty Tuesday

 
This oldest child of mine turned 32 the 28th of March.
He had his favorite meal.

 

 
And I made his favorite birthday cake again this year!

Pecan Praline Cheese Cake
Crust: • 1/2 stick of melted butter
•1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
•1/4 cup granulated sugar

•Filling:
•4 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened
•1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
•4 eggs
•1/3 cup all-purpose flour
•1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Preparation:
Preheat oven to 325°.
Combine crust ingredients and press into bottom of a 9-inch spring form pan.
In a large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy. Gradually beat in condensed milk; beat until smooth. Add flour, eggs, and vanilla; beat until well blended. Pour into prepared crust. Wrap the bottom of the spring form pan in heavy duty foil; place the pan in a shallow baking pan, such as a jelly roll pan. Put the pans in the oven and add about 2 cups of hot water to the shallow baking pan, or to a depth of about 1/2-inch. Bake for 1 hour, or until lightly browned. The cheesecake will be slightly jiggly in the center.


PECAN PRALINE SAUCE

1/2 stick butter
1 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 c. pecan halves
1/4 c. light Karo syrup
1/2 c. sour cream

Melt butter over low heat; add pecans. Stir until light brown; add sugar and syrup. Continue to stir until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and blend in sour cream. Pour over Cheese Cake.

I don't know about you but I was late to Royal Wedding.
I didn't set my alarm clock.
Actually the dogs woke me up.
And when I threw them out the back door and turned on the morning news
The Royal Wedding is all I got!
I finally got there just as they were taking the carriage ride.
I did wear a gown, my night gown that is.
And I did catch a few of the special moments
on the news replays.
Glad that's over.
Now maybe we can get back to the real world.
