I've Been Published!

I took that picture of my cousin friend's, Thanksgiving Turkey!
She called one morning back in September
and wanted to know if I had time to come
take a picture of her Turkey.
Well, that was a first!
A photo shoot for a Turkey!
I felt honored!
 See!! My picture, her turkey!
She writes a little article in the Golden Isle Magazine,
(a local free to the public magazine),
about her Farm life or maybe her garden.
Any way, she was writing an article
this time on her first time ever raising her
own Thanksgiving Turkey.
She wanted to be able to put an actual picture of it
in the magazine instead of the usual google image
the editor puts in.
A face only a mother could love!
She called the other day to tell me that the
Nov/Dec Magazine was out and they used my picture!
She was excited but wanted to say she was sorry that
they didn't give me the credit for having taken the picture.
I told her it was okay maybe next time.
She knows I took it and I know I took
it and now you know I took it and that makes me happy!
That is my Turkey Story and I'm sticking to it!
It's not even that great a picture but still, they used it :)

Encounter with a Turkey
By Uncle Sam
We found ourselves facing an upcoming holiday. You guessed it! Thanksgiving! What goes with Thanksgiving? What else? A turkey. We had an abundance of them. At least 12 were parading around our chicken pen. I enlisted my namesake, and his eight year old buddy Chris to help me capture our star prize and would-be guest for the special dinner. After a short period of time, they returned with big grins and a full grown turkey. Having recently wrung 70 necks of cousin chickens, I attempted to do a similar feat with “Old Tom”. As I grabbed him by the neck, I noticed a substantial difference in his neck, and that of his poultry kin. Much larger bird, much stronger neck! One whirl around my head, two whirls around my head, three whirls around my head, and I was tiring quickly. I grabbed the bird’s neck with both hands, and he started fighting back …. with his wings which were flapping all over the place. He knocked my spectacles from my head while making a spectacle of me. BOOM! I tossed him to the ground, hoping his neck was broken. He took off running with two young boys in hot pursuit.
Once they were able to chase him down, I had a chance to re-think my plan. I was catching my breath from the battle by sitting on a block of wood. That was it! I would do it like they do in the movies. I went for my ax! I brought some small rope with me. Once more, I enlisted the help of the two young boys. “Hold him tight, guys,” I instructed them. I looped the rope around his neck, instructed Chris to hold the rope tight while my young son held his feet. “Position his head right over this chopping block and try to hold him still.” Over my head went the ax as the two lads held him as still as they could. “Once the head is separated boys, drop the turkey to the ground, and he will be finished.”
WHACK!
It was something to behold. The turkey hit the ground as young Sammy let him go. The problem was, he did not just lay there dead. He was flopping and now you know where the old saying “running around like a chicken with his head cut off” comes from. My son’s friend, Chris forgot to turn the rope and head loose and his eyes became close to saucer size as he backed a hasty retreat with the turkey head dangling and the turkey seeming to follow in his direction. Much yelling and lots of laughter finally brought him around to dropping the head to the ground while seeking protective territory on the porch.
That was the last time I killed a turkey. Besides, he was tough on the table for dinner. From then on, Butterball was the route we took. The rest of the turkeys grew longer in the wings and one by one, they took flight from the chicken pen. They may still be flying around Bleckley County Georgia today.
