Friday Shoot~Out's~St. Simons Isl.

Heading over to the Islands the
Pier area is a popular place to visit.

I use to wait tables at Mullet Bay in the late 1990's. It was a fun place to work. You could really make some good money in the peak of the season.

The best place to sit is out on the porch when it's not to hot.
They have the best Shrimp Bisque and awesome chicken fingers.
Kid friendly place with brown paper and a mug of crayons on the tables.
Around the corner is the "4th of May Cafe"!
Yum, they have the best squash casserole and spinach souffle along with other great home cooking as well as local seafood.

The Sandcastle has a great breakfast and lunch. I love their Marinated Veggie Salad with grilled chicken and pecans! I could eat it everyday!

It's fun to sit outside here too!

Across the street is the playground
over looking the beach and Pier.

As we were playing today we heard a loud fog horn coming from this big ship leaving port. The girls really got off on it.

It's the first time they have seen a ship leaving. Shelby wanted me to take another picture of it as it was going on by.

After playing so hard you work up an appetite for a little treat at ZuZu's.

Shelby waiting patiently for her 'white" ice cream. I got chocolate chip and she wanted a taste. Then she wanted to trade. She didn't want her 'white' anymore.

'White' ice cream or not this kid isn't
going to smile for nothing!
It's fun to ride bikes all through this area.
Just ride on up and park at Brogen's
go on in and eat some of the best onion rings along with lots of other great things.

If you are lucky you can sit up top deck. It over looks the whole Pier area and you've got a great view of the ocean.
Another one of my favorite places to eat is Barbra Jeans! They bring to every table a basket of the best home made hot breads, pumpkin, jalapeno and a wheat roll. Oh it is so good you might need to ask for another basket full!

There is little doubt that they are best known for the "Crab Cakes", but the "She Crab Soup", is outstanding! Also they have a slightly mysterious “Chocolate Stuff” dessert you just can't miss out on.

Standing on the Pier and looking back down the street. Beautiful shot and I'm sorry to have left out about 8 more places to eat. But I chose my favorites.

One last place that is a favorite on the Island is Nazzaro's. It's high end and expensive. We only eat there on special occasions, say an Anniversary or birthday with zeros in them.
Leaving the Island and going North on Hyw 17 you'll run into
Mudcat's!

They are a good place for lunch and dinner.

They are right on the water and the side has tables and you can eat outside over looking the water and the boats.
They have a wonderful Shrimp Salad. Really good onion rings and the best fresh catch grilled.

And late in the evening as the sun is going down you can get some awesome shots of the sunset.

And one of the very best places to eat in Brunswick is at Pat and Farell's house and it is a great treat if you are invited. She is the best cook ever. She has a blog and started putting some of her family recipes on it and are we ever so glad to be a part of her family!
And last but not least is something that is very popular around these parts. It's what we call a "Low County Boil" Once it's cooked you pour it out onto a big table covered in news paper. When it's all over you just pull it all up and toss it in the trash can. Best ever!!

Lowcountry Boil
4 pounds small red potatoes

5 quarts water
1 (3-ounce) bag of crab boil seasoning
4 tablespoons Old Bay seasoning
2 pounds kielbasa or hot smoked link
sausage, cut into 1 ½-inch pieces
6 ears of corn, halved
4 pounds large fresh shrimp,

Cocktail sauce
Add potatoes to large pot, then add 5 quarts water and seasonings. Cover pot and heat to a rolling boil; cook 5 minutes. Add sausage and corn, and return to a boil. Cook 10 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
Add shrimp to stockpot; cook 3 to 4 minutes or until shrimp turn pink. Drain. Serve with cocktail sauce. Serves 12.

This seafood dish is a combination of shrimp, sausage, corn, and potatoes. Great for relaxing trips to the beach, it is also easy to create for a crowd. Lowcountry boil can be served on newspaper for easy clean up. Crab, onion, and butter are frequent additions to the pot, and having a removable drain basket only makes cooking easier. The rule of thumb here is the bigger the crowd, the bigger the pot.

I've made this shrimp boil many, many times. It's great to have for an outdoor barbeque party.

Gigi, you need more enthusiasm, girl! Just kidding. What a great presentation you made. It makes me want to go back to Brunswick to eat. Maybe you could make us some Brunswick Stew. I love your bubbly personality. It will be good for us, all.
Drop on down to St. Aug. for a visit. Bring the family. Gordon

That was an tough assignment with your southern cooking genes. You must have caught the top of a very huge mountain of eating places in the area. You made me hungry.

Friends and relatives are still talking about our 50th Anniversary party in 2006 where low country fare was enjoyed by over 150 guests and everytime I see the photos of folks dipping up their plates, and going back for seconds and thirds, my mouth drools - cause I didn't have time to eat for visiting with everyone. Until that last batch that the spice bag burst and made it too hot for me.
